Our rational might sound ridiculous, but April is our best time!
Hockey season has ended, its warmer and… we have more time for the cattle.

For real though - there’s no single “best” time to calve — it really does depend on your farm, available labour, weather, and marketing goals.

For us - this this is spring!
We see warmer weather, along with lower calf stress and mortality. If there are calves that need a little extra help, we are more available to put the time in that’s needed.

This might not be the ideal for others- depending on their unique situations.

Winter calving typically gives calves more time to grow before fall sales.
This timing also fits well in mixed farming systems, where spring bring increased field work for crop production.

Some prefer late summer when weather risks and disease pressures are minimized.
This also avoids overlap with cropping or off‑farm work (yes - the majority of beef producers also have off farm work.)

One things for sure, I love seeing all the calving stories and getting pumped up for calving season over here!!!... while we patiently wait for ours… 😊

Did you know wrinkly eggs are a sign of stress?

After adding some new hens to the flock we found this wrinkly egg - signs of stressed bird. Its very normal for hens to become stressed after moving. This directly affects egg production, not only in volume but shell qualities as well!

After a few days the social “pecking order” was restored and its been smooth laying ever since!

These guys work fast, efficient and don’t compromise on quality. They worked through snow, rain, mud and rocks. Not much slowed them down, finishing 20 acres in less than 3 days! Absolute pros without a doubt.

Yes a few trees must be sacrificed but it’s worth it. 🫡

This year we are rebuilding fence to keep our cattle out the dedicated wetland area on our farm.

By keeping the bovines out we can restore and maintain the native habitat for wildlife… like this wild turkey! 🦃

Building a resilient landscape for agricultural requires us to look at the entire ecosystem. This means protecting our wetlands, managing woodlot and grazing areas for livestock.
