If you look at the price of a quarter beef and work out how much it costs per person per day (a quarter lasts a family of 4 approximately 3 months) it’s less than $5 / day!!

That’s cheaper than Starbucks everyday, cheaper than McDonalds and cheaper than store bought too.

Did you know wrinkly eggs are a sign of stress?

After adding some new hens to the flock we found this wrinkly egg - signs of stressed bird. Its very normal for hens to become stressed after moving. This directly affects egg production, not only in volume but shell qualities as well!

After a few days the social “pecking order” was restored and its been smooth laying ever since!

No more wrinkly eggs.

Yes a few trees must be sacrificed but it’s worth it. 🫡

This year we are rebuilding fence to keep our cattle out the dedicated wetland area on our farm.

By keeping the bovines out we can restore and maintain the native habitat for wildlife… like this wild turkey! 🦃

Building a resilient landscape for agricultural requires us to look at the entire ecosystem. This means protecting our wetlands, managing woodlot and grazing areas for livestock.

At the time we lived over 300km away, with no intentions of moving our family or relocating farms.

But sometimes life has a way of pushing you closer to exactly where you need to be.

The last 9 months have been challenging with so much change for our entire family. We have been so fortunate to have such supportive friends, family and an amazing community who welcomed us with open arms.

At the time we lived over 300km away, with no intentions of moving our family or relocating farms.

But sometimes life has a way of pushing you closer to exactly where you need to be.

The last 9 months have been challenging with so much change for our entire family. We have been so fortunate to have such supportive friends, family and an amazing community who welcomed us with open arms.

We all get one shot.

We made the decision to sell our house, pack up our family and move 300km+ to save the family farm.

No respect…
Up until know this old loafing barn got no respect.

It sat low, with no concrete, hydro, water or gates.
Made for some interesting chore duties in the winter months, from what I hear lol. Fortunately (or unfortunately 🤔) our kids will never have these same experience to build their bank of “jobs I hated”😅

When planning to move our cattle across the province to the family farm in 2024 we knew early on that the main barn ceiling was too low for our loader. The best option we had was to see the potential in this old building. It was time for this old barn to shine!

We added concrete, hydro, water and came up with a decent solution for 3 calving pens. The central water bowl will service all 3 with a feeder along the back wall. All the gate measurements line up so we can fold them away and allow for a larger pen when needed. With a little live and lots of attention its gone from zero to hero!
Pretty damn nifty given time we’ve had.

Looking forward to our first crop of calves in this respectful old barn - stay tuned for April to see how it goes!
